When compared with the stock market or precious metals, the difference is enormous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a sudden 10% drop in a popular stock option\u2019s value, would be a catastrophic event that is almost never seen in such markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, with Bitcoin, this is a normal day in the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does a Volatility index work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bitcoin Volatility Index is a tool that measures the fluctuation of the coin\u2019s value, compared to the average value of a given timeframe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More specifically, volatility calculates past price-action and uses this information to predict (in %) the potential of a sudden price change. A higher the % indicates a higher investment risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is Bitcoin so volatile?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When an asset is relatively new to the market and still has a small market cap, it will naturally be more volatile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give an example, let\u2019s take a look at gold. The precious metal has been used as a store of value since barter times and currently has a market cap of $7,2 Trillion dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, try to compare this to Bitcoin. The digital asset has a mere $170 billion dollar market cap and was only recently introduced to the world (2009).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is only natural that Bitcoin, as well as other cryptocurrencies, will be a lot more volatile than gold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As demand for Bitcoin grows, so will the coin\u2019s market cap. This is because Bitcoin only has a limited supply of coins. With an increase in demand, there will be a growth in the price, and thus in the total market cap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good thing is &#8211; with a higher market cap, large-scale buy\/sell orders will not affect the market as much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the higher the price of Bitcoin, the lower its volatility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to calculate Bitcoin\u2019s Volatility?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The percentage of volatility is measured by calculating the fluctuation of Bitcoin price from a specific price point at a particular timestamp. For BTC, this is the opening price tag of the coin at the beginning of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going in more detail, the formula used to calculate the daily volatility of Bitcoin is based on the coin\u2019s standard price deviation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This standard deviation is calculated by finding the square root (\u221a) of Bitcoin\u2019s price variance.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having said that, here is how you calculate Bitcoin\u2019s price variance.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Timestamp the price of Bitcoin at different moments throughout the day(the number of samples taken into consideration is measured as X). Then calculate as follows:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Bitcoin\u2019s price at the start of the day \u2013 Price at X)^2\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sum up all the findings = \u2211(Bitcoin\u2019s price at the start of the day \u2013 Price at X)^2\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Divide your findings by X = \u2211(Bitcoin\u2019s opening price \u2013 Price at X)^2 \/X<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing the above, we can now use the following calculation to measure the volatility of Bitcoin:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bitcoin\u2019s standard deviation = \u221a(\u2211(Bitcoin\u2019s opening price \u2013 Price at X)^2 \/X).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can I best use the Bitcoin Volatility Index?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tool is great for two reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To increase your chances of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/paybis.com\/blog\/how-to-buy-the-dip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">buying the dip<\/a>\u201d and thus increase your success of swing trading.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To verify if your trading-related emotional distress is valid or not &#8211; to make data-driven trading decisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does the volatility of Bitcoin affect other cryptocurrencies?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Bitcoin experiences large price fluctuations that affect its volatility &#8211; for example, if a <a href=\"https:\/\/paybis.com\/blog\/what-is-a-bitcoin-whale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bitcoin whale<\/a> sells its coins &#8211; the whole market experiences volatility as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This happens mainly because of two reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin is the main trading pair for most cryptocurrencies and is thus used the most when trading across exchange platforms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin\u2019s market value currently forms more than <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/charts\/#dominance-percentage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">66% of the total cryptocurrency market cap<\/a>. It is only natural that a large fluctuation in its price will cause investors to create buy\/sell orders that include different cryptocurrencies as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the last 2 years, we have seen two prevailing trends as far as crypto volatility is considered:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Bitcoin\u2019s value increases, most \u201caltcoins\u201d do not follow its positive price traction. Bitcoin be very volatile towards both a positive and negative direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, 2024 holds a lot of exciting events that will affect the volatility of Bitcoin\u2019s price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First off, the BTC network will experience a halving in mining rewards, during the second week of May 2024.
