Throughout time, many of those coins have become inaccessible. So how many Bitcoins are lost by now?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many Bitcoins are lost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no exact answer to this question. It is extremely difficult to correctly measure the variables which help us understand which coins have permanently lost their ownership in the Bitcoin network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, several firms have made rough estimations in the number of lost coins:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/lost-coins-study-estimates-btcs-true-supply\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Bitcoin.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, approximately 20% of Bitcoin\u2019s circulating supply has become inaccessible (worth of 3-4 million coins).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investopedia, another group of market researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/news\/20-all-btc-lost-unrecoverable-study-shows\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that 20% Bitcoins are lost and unrecoverable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chainalysis, a cryptocurrency analysis firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/wired-lost-bitcoin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that around 17% to 23% Bitcoins are lost. This amount equals to 2-4 million Bitcoins.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How are these Bitcoin lost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin can be lost due to various reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>By Malware Attack:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The most common method for stealing crypto coins is attacking by malware. It can be through Ransomware; Viruses, Fake links (spoofing); and Phishing (unauthorized access to personal information).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>By Cyber-attacks:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cyber-attacks are the second-largest problem and a frequent occurrence in new or developing cryptocurrencies. Hacker attacks are increasingly common, and fraud methods are becoming more advanced. While not necessarily lost, the hacked coins cannot be exchanged on any cryptocurrency trading platform.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lack of legal framework and legal risks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Bitcoins are intangible digital assets for which there are no property rights. Once Bitcoin is stolen from their respective wallets, the owner is unable to identify the person behind the public address unless it is whitelisted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Loss of Private Keys:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/paybis.com\/blog\/what-is-a-private-key\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private keys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allow users to access and use their funds. Once lost, users need to make sure a mnemonic phrase is at hand. If that is lost too, the coins are \u201clost\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Due to Transaction Mistakes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sending Bitcoin to the wrong address also leads to losses. The transaction cannot be canceled, so the amount sent cannot be refunded or reversed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is anyone able to access lost Bitcoin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once users of the network lose access to their keys, they are unable to access and claim their Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same goes for coins that are illegally obtained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the positive side, however, stolen Bitcoins can be traced and are recoverable.
