Ethereum is still the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, sitting well behind Bitcoin but far ahead of everything else. It’s had one of the roughest years of any major coin in 2026. ETH hit an all-time high of nearly $4,950 in August 2025, then fell to around $1,450 by June 2026, a drop of more than 70%. It’s since recovered to trade near $1,900 in late July.<\/p>\n

This guide looks at what drove that drop, where Ethereum stands right now, and what analysts are forecasting for the rest of 2026 and beyond.<\/p>\n

What Is Ethereum?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Anyone can build financial products on the Ethereum protocol, from tokens and decentralized exchanges to lending platforms and stablecoins. That flexibility is why Ethereum became the backbone of DeFi in the years after its ICO-era popularity spike in 2017.<\/p>\n

A lot has changed since then. ICOs are largely a thing of the past, but Ethereum’s role as the leading smart contract platform has held up. It now underpins most of the DeFi market and a large share of stablecoin activity, and it’s increasingly used as a settlement layer for tokenized real-world assets. Franklin Templeton runs part of its tokenized fund platform on Ethereum, and public companies now hold ETH directly as a treasury asset the same way some hold Bitcoin. One firm, Bitmine Immersion Technologies, holds close to 5.77 million ETH and is approaching a target of owning 5% of the entire supply.<\/p>\n

From Mining to Staking: How Ethereum Changed<\/h2>\n

Ethereum used to run on the same mining system as Bitcoin, where computers competed to solve puzzles and earn rewards. That changed in September 2022 with an upgrade known as the Merge, which switched the network to proof of stake. Instead of mining, holders now earn rewards by staking their ETH, locking it up to help secure the network.<\/p>\n

That shift has had a lasting effect on Ethereum’s supply and demand. As of March 2026, roughly $76 billion worth of ETH is staked, which means a large share of the circulating supply is locked up rather than sitting on exchanges ready to sell. With that background covered, let’s look at how Ethereum’s price has actually moved since then.<\/p>\n

Ethereum’s price history has had a few defining stretches. The 2017 ICO boom took it from around $95 to nearly $1,400 in about a year, before a long decline brought it back under $100 in late 2018. It recovered over the following years and eventually broke past that old high, going on to set a new all-time high of nearly $4,950 in August 2025.<\/p>\n

2026 has been a much harder year. ETH fell steadily through the first half of the year, hitting a low near $1,450 in June, more than 70% off its peak. It’s since climbed back to around $1,900 in late July, holding above $1,800 for several sessions in a row, which is the most sustained recovery it’s had all year.<\/p>\n

Ethereum still tends to move in the same direction as Bitcoin during major market swings, though 2026 has shown some periods where ETH moved independently, including stretches where Ethereum ETF inflows outpaced Bitcoin ETF inflows.<\/p>\n

Ethereum Price Prediction for the Rest of 2026<\/h3>\n

Where ETH goes for the rest of 2026 depends a lot on whether it can hold above $1,800. Technical analysts have flagged a close above $2,050 as the level that would open the door toward $4,000, and potentially a new all-time high later this cycle. Losing the $1,800 level, on the other hand, risks giving back the recovery gained in July.<\/p>\n

A few things are supporting ETH’s case for a stronger second half. Ethereum ETFs have kept pulling in money, at times faster than Bitcoin ETFs. Staking continues to lock up a large share of supply. And Ethereum remains the default settlement layer for tokenized assets and DeFi, giving it a use case that Bitcoin doesn’t really compete for.<\/p>\n

Ethereum Price Prediction 2027-2030<\/span><\/h3>\n

Longer-range forecasts vary a lot, which is normal for any prediction this far out. Standard Chartered has floated a long-term target of $40,000, based on the idea that Ethereum’s role in DeFi and tokenized finance could eventually let it rival or surpass Bitcoin in some respects. More conservative estimates land closer to $10,000.<\/p>\n

That’s a wide range, and it should be treated as exactly that: a range of possible outcomes, not a forecast to plan around. The 2028 Bitcoin halving is also expected to have some indirect effect on the wider market, including Ethereum, the way past halvings have tended to lift sentiment across crypto more broadly.<\/p>\n

What Analysts Are Saying in 2026<\/h2>\n

Views on Ethereum’s next move are split, which tells you something on its own.<\/p>\n

Some analysts see the current setup as bullish. They point to the July recovery off the $1,450 low, rising staking demand, and strong Ethereum ETF inflows as signs that institutional confidence hasn’t gone away, even after a brutal first half of the year.<\/p>\n

Others stay cautious. Ethereum is still down more than 60% from its August 2025 peak, and its price has been highly sensitive to macro news like inflation data and Fed policy, which means it could just as easily slip back toward its June lows if that news turns unfavorable.<\/p>\n

Long-term price targets from major institutions range from around $10,000 on the conservative end to $40,000 on the bullish end. Treat both as scenarios, not predictions to bank on.<\/p>\n
