Ethereum, the second-largest blockchain<\/a> network after Bitcoin, launched a major network update over a year ago \u2013 the Dencun upgrade. With this new development, the Ethereum network was enhanced considerably, bringing much-needed changes to its layer-2 solutions, transaction costs, and overall network performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what exactly changed after the Dencun upgrade, how did it impact the Ethereum foundation, its processes, and more importantly, monetary policies? Since Ethereum is scheduled to release a new update in March 2025 called Pectra, let\u2019s explore Dencun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Ethereum\u2019s Major Updates Leading to Dencun<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since Ethereum was first launched in 2015, the project underwent continuous development, and the latest Dencun upgrade is dubbed by many as one of the biggest. But before we jump into Dencun, let’s briefly look back at other significant Ethereum developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Ethereum 2.0 (2020): <\/strong>No doubt the most important update in Ethereum’s history which introduced Ethereum\u2019s proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism, laying the foundation for a more energy-efficient and scalable network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. London Hard Fork (2021): <\/strong>The London upgrade implemented EIP-1559, in effect restructuring Ethereum\u2019s fee market by introducing a base fee and burning a portion of transaction fees, thus turning ETH into a deflationary asset.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. The Merge (2022): <\/strong>During the Merge event<\/a>, Ethereum fully transitioned from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS), drastically reducing energy consumption by over 99%<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Shanghai Upgrade (2023): <\/strong>The Shanghai upgrade made it possible for Ethereum network users access and withdraw their staked ether (ETH) funds<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    <\/a>What Is the Ethereum (ETH) Dencun Upgrade?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The beginning of 2024 was quite literally shaped by key events in the global financial sector, brought about by evolving artificial intelligence frameworks as well as the Bitcoin BTC 0.0% ETFs approval<\/a> in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Specifically, the positive attitude of governmental institutions towards cryptocurrencies and their adoption have resulted in significant funding from traditional finance, namely that of Blackrock and Ark Invest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, as motivating as these events were, the biggest driving factor for the Dencun upgrade were the increasing gas fees. While the layer-2 solutions have certainly enhanced the performance of the Ethereum blockchain network, offering a more scalable and faster mode for processing transactions off Ethereum’s mainnet, gas prices grew rapidly. This made it difficult to discuss further development plans and widespread adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Enter Dencun. The Ethereum Dencun upgrade, also called Ethereum network’s cost-cutting upgrade, is actually a combination of two critical network updates: Deneb and Cancun, hence the name \u2013 Cancun-Deneb (Dencun). The joint upgrade rolled out on March 13, 2024, and it aims to essentially cut transaction costs of layer-2 solutions and enhance Ethereum’s scalability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
