The worst day in stock market history, and what Bitcoin actually did this week
Bitcoin sits near $81,500 this morning, about 0.6% below where it started the week. Seven days of trading, and it finished close to where it began.
The week sounded considerably louder than that. It opened with people online calling a crash for Monday, and the reason was a date. The worst day in stock market history was 19 October 1987, when share prices in New York dropped 22.6% between opening and closing. This week the 19th fell on a Monday, and that was the entire reason anyone expected a crash. Yet Bitcoin finished the day higher.
Sentiment moved further than the price. The index that tracks how confident the market feels, on a scale running from 0 to 100, read 68 yesterday and 50 today. Eighteen points in a single day, against a full week in which Bitcoin travelled less than one percent.
What any of it means for next week is an open question, and this piece has no answer to it. What it does show is the distance between how a week sounds and what a week does, which is the gap worth closing before anyone reacts to a headline.
A 22.6% fall in 1987 was the only basis anyone had for expecting one in 2026. These figures describe where the price has been and how the market feels about it, which is a separate matter from where anything goes next.
