The week bitcoin moved on something that had nothing to do with crypto
Bitcoin traded at $87,500 on Wednesday and below $83,000 twenty four hours later, a fall of more than $4,500. By Friday morning it had recovered to around $85,200, which leaves it up on the week and down on the day, depending on which line you draw.
The cause sits outside crypto. Lending money to the US government now pays more than at any time since 2007, and traders expect four more rate increases by the middle of 2027. Money moved toward those returns, and almost everything outside government bonds was sold to fund the move. The Federal Reserve raised rates again this month and inflation is still above its 2% target, which is why traders expect more increases to come. Crypto fell this week as part of that shift, for reasons that had nothing to do with crypto.
The evidence for that is in how wide the fall was. Ether and Solana each dropped about 3% on the same day, and XRP fell 7.5%. When everything falls together on the day bond yields make the front page, the explanation is usually the bond yields.
A week like this produces a great deal of confident commentary and very little that turns out to be true. Rate expectations moved, markets repriced, and where it settles is not yet known by anyone.
The fee is the one figure that gets fixed before you commit rather than discovered afterwards.
That matters more in a week like this one, because fees add up across a stretch when you are trading more often than usual.
