Spending Report

The real crypto story this month has nothing to do with price

Somewhere this month, someone tapped a card at a grocery store checkout, and the balance behind that payment started as crypto. That's not a hypothetical. It's the single most common thing happening in crypto payments right now.

Paymentscan data, reported by CoinDesk on August 23, found that crypto card spending hit $1.04 billion in July, the most recent full month on record. That's more than triple what it was a year earlier, growth that's held steady through periods when token prices swung in both directions, a sign this is genuine demand rather than a side effect of a bull run.

Here's how it actually works. A crypto card doesn't spend Bitcoin or Ethereum directly. It draws from a crypto balance, converts it instantly at the register, and settles with the merchant in ordinary dollars or euros. The conversion happens in the background, so the tap feels like any other card, even though what's behind it started as crypto.

That's also why one asset carries almost all of it. Of the spending Paymentscan tracked, 70% moved through dollar-pegged coins like USDC and USDT rather than anything that fluctuates. Spend an asset that might be worth 10% more next week, and buying coffee becomes a small financial decision every time. Spend a dollar-pegged token, and it isn't one, which is exactly why stablecoins have become the default for actually paying with crypto rather than just holding it.

And the money isn't going where you'd guess. Groceries are the single largest category tracked. Clothing and footwear, per Crypto.com's own annual card report, was the fastest-growing category of all, up 68% year over year, running alongside everyday transport and household goods.

This isn't crypto being spent on anything exotic. It's crypto paying for an ordinary week.

This is what "crypto going mainstream" actually looks like once you get past the price charts. It isn't a number moving. It's people who already hold it choosing a stablecoin over their bank account, because for a growing list of everyday purchases, it's simply become the easier option.

Every one of those taps starts the same way, though. Before anyone can spend a stablecoin, they have to hold one first.
