Market Update

The number that says how scared the market is, and the input it has been missing

Somebody has put a number on how frightened or greedy the crypto market is. It is called the Fear and Greed Index, it runs from 0 to 100, and it moves every day. Zero is everyone panicking. One hundred is everyone piling in. Today it opens October at 71.

The month behind that reading is more interesting than the reading itself. Across the last 30 days the index averaged 67, with a low of 50 and a high of 78. It never showed Fear on a single day. Only 2 days landed at Neutral, and every other day sat in Greed or higher. A full month without one fearful reading is the kind of detail that gets lost when the number is quoted on its own.

The score is built from six inputs and one of them is currently switched off. The survey that asks traders directly how they feel has been paused, so the figure everyone repeats is running on five parts out of six.

The index measures mood rather than direction, and a high reading has never been a forecast of anything. It records what the market is feeling today and makes no claim at all about tomorrow.

The fee is the one number in the picture that is fixed before you commit rather than discovered afterwards.
