Market Update

The market that doesn't take Labor Day off

Wall Street closes on Monday for Labor Day. Crypto doesn't close at all, and this year the holiday lands on the back of a rally.

Labor Day shuts the NYSE and Nasdaq on Monday, 7 September. Equity and ETF orders placed over the long weekend sit unexecuted until the opening bell on Tuesday, 8 September, so Friday afternoon's close is the last price those holdings have for three days. Crypto has no equivalent. There is no session to open, no bell, no holiday calendar. Bitcoin, up 5.5% this week, keeps trading at 3am on Sunday exactly as it does at 3pm on a Wednesday.

Analysts point to a specific mechanical reason moves cluster in these hours. Weekend and holiday order books run thin, since fewer large institutional buyers and sellers are active. Market makers hold lighter books, the order book gets shallower on both sides, and with less liquidity absorbing each trade, the same order that would barely register on a Tuesday afternoon can swing the price sharply on a Sunday night. A three day weekend is that setup extended, which is why long holidays tend to be the most eventful stretches on the crypto calendar.

That mechanic cuts both ways. In December 2021, the same thin-liquidity dynamic produced a 22% single-day crash, on a Saturday, while most of the financial world was offline and unable to react until Monday.

Rallies and crashes alike have landed on days a traditional market would simply have been shut. Crypto has no such sign in the window.

Two practical things follow from it. Price discovery carries on while the rest of the market is paused, so Tuesday's open has to absorb a long weekend of crypto news that stocks have not priced yet. And for anyone holding crypto alongside equities, it is the only position in the portfolio that can actually be moved before Tuesday morning.

We're not telling you which way the next move goes, and we're not suggesting you should be awake for it. What the holiday demonstrates is a structural fact about how this market works, not a signal about where it's headed.
