Why Bitcoin's price moves in jumps rather than drifts
Bitcoin dropped below $80,000 this week and trades near $79,500, about 2.2% lower than seven days ago and roughly 6% lower across the month. Those moves arrived in steps rather than a slope, which is how the price usually travels, and the reason has less to do with sentiment than with how much money is sitting in the market at any one instant.
CoinDesk Research measures the orders waiting close to Bitcoin's current price, and on 7 October it counted about $11.7 million resting within 1% of it. Widen the band to 5% and the figure reaches roughly $24 million. That was the deepest reading of the dates it measured this year, and it fell about 12% over the following day.
Set that against the $26 billion of Bitcoin that changes hands in a single day. When an order arrives that is large relative to what is waiting nearby, it consumes those orders and the price has to travel further before it meets the next buyer or seller. The depth of that queue is what decides whether a given trade nudges the price or moves it.
A second mechanism compounds the first. Traders who borrow to buy are closed out automatically once the price falls past a set point, and each of those closures sells in the same direction the price is already heading. On the 8th and 9th of October, CoinGlass recorded $1.19 billion of positions closing inside 24 hours across 192,576 accounts, with $1.056 billion of it coming from traders who had bet on a rise.
About $11.7 million of orders stand between Bitcoin's price and its next level. These figures describe the structure a price moves through, which is a separate question from where it moves next.
