Bitcoin is down to $75K after a $2.3 trillion stock crash
Bitcoin is down to about $75,000, more than $5,000 lower than a day earlier. That is a fall of about 6% in 24 hours, and the reason sits on Wall Street.
On Thursday, 5 November, US stocks had their worst day since April 2025. The Nasdaq 100, home of the biggest tech companies, lost $2.3 trillion in market value in a single day. The S&P 500 fell 4.4%, the Dow lost more than 1,800 points and the main index of chipmakers dropped 12%.
Analysts point to the US midterm elections. Investors worry the new Congress could slow the build-out of AI data centres, so they sold the chip and AI companies that had led the market this year.
Bitcoin followed, and borrowed money made the fall deeper. Many traders had borrowed to bet on a rise. As the price dropped, exchanges closed those bets automatically, and each forced sale pushed the price a little lower. According to CoinGlass, more than $1 billion of these bets closed in 24 hours.
The mood changed with it. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, which scores the market's mood from 0 to 100, went from 50 (neutral) on Thursday to 28 (fear) on Friday. Nobody can say from these numbers where the price goes next. They do show how a sell-off on Wall Street reached crypto within hours.
