Crypto moved $44.3 trillion more than the New York Stock Exchange last year
The New York Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange on earth by the value of shares that pass through it. Last year that came to $41.4 trillion, which put it ahead of the Nasdaq and every other venue in the ranking. It is the number most people are reaching for when they picture serious money changing hands.
Crypto markets moved $85.7 trillion over the same twelve months. The distance between the two figures is $44.3 trillion, which on its own is larger than the NYSE's entire year. Set the NYSE and the Nasdaq side by side and the pair reaches $81 trillion, and crypto still finishes in front.
Broken down to a single day, that is $264.5 billion moving through crypto markets against roughly $165 billion through the NYSE.
Part of the explanation sits in the calendar rather than in appetite. The NYSE gets 251 sessions in 2026, and the other 114 days are weekends and public holidays when nothing trades at all. Crypto has not had one of those days since the first Bitcoin block, so Saturdays and Christmas mornings count toward its total like any other day.
Crypto out-traded the world's two largest stock exchanges put together, on a calendar that never gives it a day off. These figures describe how much money moved, which is a different question from where any price went next.
Whichever hour you are reading this, the larger of those two markets is open.
